On March 17th, following Samsung and BOE, rumors have emerged that TCL CSOT may announce an investment plan for an 8.6-generation OLED production line this year.

Panel manufacturers are progressively investing in 8.6-gen lines mainly to meet the market demand for OLED in IT applications. This year, Apple is set to release 11-inch and 12.9-inch OLED Pros, with predictions indicating that by 2028, Apple will lead the growth in OLED penetration in the IT market.

Besides Apple, manufacturers like Lenovo and ASUS have been actively incorporating OLED screens into their high-end laptops in recent years. Apple has also planned a full transition to OLED screens for its future high-end laptops. Furthermore, as the prices of OLED panels decrease, the pricing of OLED laptops has dropped from over 10,000 yuan to 4,000-5,000 yuan, enhancing penetration in the mid-range market.

Sigmaintell Consulting forecasts that the shipment volume of OLED laptop panels will be 3.6 million units in 2023, with market penetration decreasing to 1.9%. As production lines for 8th-gen and above OLED IT screens are set to start mass production in 2026-2027, the shipment volume of OLED laptop panels is expected to see a significant increase, with projections reaching 16.9 million units in 2026 and penetration rising to 8%. The OLED laptop panel market is anticipated to enter a period of rapid growth from 2027 to 2028.

Omdia predicts that sales in the IT OLED market will grow from $2.534 billion this year to $8.913 billion in 2029, with an annual growth rate of 28.6%.

As early as April last year, Samsung Display announced a 4.1 trillion KRW investment in the IT OLED sector by 2026, aiming to build a production line capable of producing 10 million laptop panels annually. Its new facility's cleanroom construction has been completed, incorporating vapor deposition machines essential for converting OLED organic materials into display pixels.

In November of the same year, BOE announced a 63 billion RMB investment in building an 8.6-generation OLED production line. BOE is currently reviewing vapor deposition machines from Canon Tokki and Sunic System for the 8.6-generation.

Additionally, LG Display is carefully considering its approach to entering the OLED market but has yet to announce an investment in the 8.6-generation OLED production line.
